ENERGY PROCESSES AND EMISSION REDUCTION - PrEM

RESEARCH LINES

  1. Energy utilisation of biomass

Biomass plays a prominent role in the renewable energy mix and contributes to secure the energy supply. It has potential as a combustible material associated with the wide variety of conversion technologies available.

The research carried out by the group in this line is focused on:

  • Pelletisation and torrefaction of biomass.
  • Biomass gasification for synthesis gas production.
  • Energy valorisation of waste for the production of renewable hydrogen with in situ capture of CO2.
  • Co-utilisation of biomass in combustion and gasification processes.
  1. CO2 capture through adsorption processes

The development of processes that allow the separation of CO2 competitively and efficiently poses a challenge for carbon-intensive industries. Adsorption processes have shown enormous potential, but their implementation on a commercial scale requires materials and process development to reduce the carbon footprint.

The research carried out by the group in this line is focused on:

  • Valorisation of biomass residues as precursors of CO2
  • Development of adsorbents with high CO2 capacity and selectivity.
  • Evaluation, design, and simulation of cyclic processes of CO2
  • Treatment of postcombustion and precombustion gases, syngas, biogas, and industrial off-gases.
    1. Valorisation of biomass waste as precursors of carbon materials

In a Circular Economy scenario, the recovery of wastes through its use as raw material for the production of carbon materials, with high performance and low cost, is presented as a more sustainable and economically more efficient alternative than landfill or incineration.

The research carried out by the group in this line is focused on:

    • Sustainable production of carbon materials.
    • Hydrothermal carbonisation for the treatment of biomass waste.
