Biomass plays a prominent role in the renewable energy mix and contributes to secure the energy supply. It has potential as a combustible material associated with the wide variety of conversion technologies available.

• Pelletisation and torrefaction of biomass.
• Biomass gasification for synthesis gas production.
• Energy valorisation of waste for the production of renewable hydrogen with in situ capture of CO₂.
• Co-utilisation of biomass in combustion and gasification processes.

2. CO₂ capture through adsorption processes

The development of processes that allow the separation of CO₂ competitively and efficiently poses a challenge for carbon-intensive industries. Adsorption processes have shown enormous potential, but their implementation on a commercial scale requires materials and process development to reduce the carbon footprint.

In a Circular Economy scenario, the recovery of wastes through its use as raw material for the production of carbon materials, with high performance and low cost, is presented as a more sustainable and economically more efficient alternative than landfill or incineration.
