Research Groups

BIOCARBON, CIRCULARITY & SUSTAINABILITY

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE GROUP

Circular economy and sustainability with industrial biomass waste of different origin (forest biomass, solid waste from vegetable tanning, macroalgae from the industrial production of Agar-Agar, various food industries (grape seed, chestnut shell, pomegranate peel ... .)).

Energy from industrial biomass wastes through various pyrolysis technologies: conventional heating, microwave heating, flash heating, hydropyrolysis ...

Preparation of carbonaceous adsorbent materials, activated carbons (ACs), from various industrial biomass wastes, by means of different thermochemical treatments with alkali hydroxides and carbonates. Chemical, morphological and textural characterization of ACs.

Preparation of carbonaceous adsorbent materials with magnetic and catalytic properties (MACs) from industrial biomass wastes. Chemical, morphological and textural characterization of MACs, as well as Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Vibrant Sample Magnetometry (VSM) characterization for the evaluation of magnetic properties.

Environmental applications of carbonaceous adsorbent materials, ACs and MACs: adsorption of pollutants in gaseous phase (VOCs, CO2, H2S, NH3, mercury) and in aqueous phase (organic compounds, from the pharmaceutical industry, ...). Gas separation (biogas, siloxanes). Regeneration of saturted carbonaceous adsorbent materials with special focus on MACs through advanced oxidation processes (PAOs).
