COMPOSITES

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE GROUP

Our activity has been traditionally focused on synthesis, processing and upscaling of carbon-based materials (graphene, activated carbons, carbon fibers, carbon/carbon composites and synthetic graphites) from natural or synthetic precursors. Our group’s research has contributed to the development of relevant traditional industries such as aluminium or stainless steel (carbon anodes and graphite electrodes). In the field of carbon composites for structural applications we have developed multiple lighweight composites for aeronautics and nuclear fusión. Lately, we have made huge efforts in finding materials for energy storage such as supercapacitors and Vanadium Redox Flow batteries. Our group experience and background is multidisciplinar ranging from chemistry and electrochemistry and engineering. As scientists we want to contribute to the climate change mitigation and thus we now focus efforts in sustainable routes for materials synthesis. We are working on the development of catalysts and carbon-based supports for water spliting.

The Composites Group is formed by seven consolidated scientists, one COMFUTURO postdoctoral fellow and a variable number of postdocs and students (UG, MEng, MChem and PhD) and technicians.
