RESEARCH LINES

The main research areas of our group are: (i) High density carbon-based materials (fibres, graphites and composites), (ii) carbon materials for electrochemical systems and energy storage (supercapacitors and redox flow batteries) and (iii) nanomaterials synthesis (graphenes, functionalized nanotubes, sustainable electrocatalysts) and formulation of ink/pastes for additive manufacturing (3D printing). Moreover we work on the development of products and processes in collaboration with carbochemical, petrochemical and other carbon-based sectors.

Our efforts now are focused in this three areas:

Carbon materials for electrochemical applications. We study and develop novel carbon materials as electrodes in electrochemical systems such as supercapacitors and vanandium Flow redox batteries. This research covers the understanding of the mechanisms involved in each process with the aim of optimising the carbon materials and the upscaling of prototypes to evaluate the systems in real conditions.

  • Synthesis, processing and three-dimensional assembling of 2D materials such as graphene oxide for its application in energy, photocatalysis, solar cells films, sensors, and structural composites with high mechanical, electrical and thermal properties or scaffolds for tissue engineering. The aim of this research is the understanding of how pristine graphite and experimental conditions affects the quality and properties of the chemically exfoliated graphenes. This will support the final goal of designing on-demand Graphene for each application.

  • Synthesis and processing of carbon supports and sustainable electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy storage
